WINNING AT GIVING

We always aim to be aspirational at High Impact Athletes.

All HIA athlete pledgers have committed to donating at least 2% of their annual income to effective charities, and if this sounds right for you please chat with us here.

But for those who want to keep winning at giving we have partnered with Giving What We Can to support the Giving What We Can Pledge. Nearly 10,000 people worldwide (including HIA’s founder Marcus Daniell) have taken this public pledge to commit 10% or more of their income to effective charities. The purpose of this pledge is threefold:

  1. Commitment: Making public commitments helps us live up to our values and stick with the goals we may otherwise let slide.

  2. Community: Giving What We Can offers a diverse community of pledgers to give support and advice to help follow through on the commitment.

  3. Culture: Taking a public pledge helps inspire others to follow our example. Together we can forge a world in which giving effectively and significantly is a cultural norm.

If the richest 1% on earth gave 10%, an additional $3.5 trillion would go to work to make our world better.
If you are earning over $60,000 USD per year, you are in the top 1% of earners.

HIA Founder and Olympic Medalist Marcus Daniell’s experience with the pledge:

“I committed to a 1% pledge at the start of 2016 after having made one-off donations in previous years, and honestly it felt a little scary making that commitment without knowing how much I’d earn on tour that year. But come year-end that 1% donation felt very comfortable and positive rather than a squeeze.
The following year I decided to commit to 5%, and that felt comfortable too!
My giving journey continued and my percentage kept growing until, at the start of 2021, I took the Giving What We Can Pledge to donate a minimum of 10% for the rest of my life. It feels great - I have deeper meaning and purpose in my day-to-day life, and winning tennis matches means I’m making progress in my own career and also helping the world at the same time!

Cheers,
Marcus and the team at HIA
